CONCERT SYNOPSIS
Our Spring 2016 Concert is Karl Jenkins' "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace," accompanied by the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. The titular work, commissioned by the British Royal Armouries Museum, commemorates the new millennium by reflecting back on the old one - from fifteenth century battle songs, through a poignant tune of the loss and guilt of survivors of World War I, to an intense, disturbing piece about the horrors of Hiroshima - all intermingled with a striking and emotive rendition of a choral Latin mass, adding depth and new meaning.
Through these diverse musical styles, both secular and sacred, the work juxtaposes the visceral against the ethereal, the descent into and devastation of war against the promise and hope of peace. Experience this thematic fight for peace in a world tormented by chaos and tragedy—an invigorating journey towards social justice and religious freedom.
“For better is peace than always war.”
